On this and every Memorial Day we honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country, and there are so many who are still in harms way. I pause today to think of them too. These men and women give years of their lives in service; they miss their baby's births, their first steps, kindergarten plays and birthdays. They miss quiet time with their spouses and holidays with their families and friends. Today we have our picnics and celebrate the long weekend, but our brothers and sisters are still in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world. Can you spare twelve minutes for them right now?
The smiles on their faces are so genuine and so happy; the soldier who comments on receiving one pair of socks and realizes that no one buys a single pair of socks, that this person has packed many boxes for the troops. There's the young woman so delighted to receive shampoo and conditioner, or deodorant that doesn't smell like a man. Those few minutes we can spend in writing a handwritten notes or making a donation to Netroots for the Troops impacts far more people than we realize. One package can touch up to ten soldiers. Please consider as we close this fundraising year making a donation or even writing some letters to go into the care packages. You have the opportunity to touch those who sacrifice so much in a real way.
